In Rooms of Falling Rain
For readers drawn to vivid, inventive poetry about queer lives, family, memory and the places that shape us.
“Gorgeous, precise poems which beautifully speak to what it is to be both inside and outside of the domestic, its familiar expectations and its relationships. A collection I wish I could move into, and live inside.”

What makes a place a home?
A shared house with a leaking roof. An artist’s cluttered studio. A garden coaxed from the landscape of childhood.
In his collection, In Rooms of Falling Rain, Tom McLaughlin opens the doors to a remarkable variety of homes and their inhabitants. Poems enter the worlds of Derek Jarman, Frida Kahlo, Emily Dickinson and other artists and writers, exploring how people make space for creativity, intimacy and individual lives.
Alongside these encounters runs a deeply personal thread: the death of Tom’s father and the Donegal landscapes that shaped both their childhoods. Salt, turf, stone and the remembered details of a familiar body give grief a precise, physical presence.
Tender, sensuous and sometimes unsettling, these poems find extraordinary possibilities in ordinary surroundings. Houses become bodies; possessions gather the weight of memory; gardens offer ways to think about love and survival. The forms shift with the spaces they inhabit, inviting you to look again at what a room can contain.
A collection to spend time inside, and revisit.
